Exercise as a form of self-love: 3 ways to support your practice

“To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness.’- Robert Morlet

At Yogikor we embody self-love.

As long-time Yoga practitioners we’ve learnt that how you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.

It’s the foundation to set healthy boundaries in your relationships, and is a boundless reserve of energy you can draw upon when times get tough.

But let’s be honest.

As a concept, self-love is something we KNOW we need.

But the HOW can be foreign, confusing, and downright difficult.

So when it feels like self-love eludes you, where do you turn?

Well for us, daily exercise is a constant foundation that keeps us calm and centered.

But there’s no one size fits all… So here’s 3 ways you can bring energy, happiness and purpose to your day through exercise ✌️

3 ways to stress less and love more

  • Yoga
  • Yoga unites body and mind in a quest to live happily.

We’ve all seen enchanting photos of mystic Yogi’s, holding impossible poses…

But in reality the practice is simple, beautiful, and accessible to everyone!

In fact, what started as a Northern Indian practice over 5,000 years ago has evolved into a daily ritual for 300 million people worldwide…

So what is the essence of yoga?

As a routine it combines physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dyana) to:

    1. Improve strength & endurance
    2. Help regulate your emotions
    3. Reduce stress & promote relaxation
    4. Promote flexibility and ease muscular and bodily pain

No matter your current flexibility, fitness or time constraints, it’s a wonderful (and easy) way to bring yourself back to balance.

  • Walking
  •  We are made to move.

But not all exercise has to be vigorous.

In fact, low-intensity walking may just be the key to a long and happy life.

In Ikigai, a book that analyses the daily habits of Okinawa’s vibrant centenarians, ‘low-intensity’ daily movement was a cornerstone of the lives of the community.

So aim for 20+ minutes of brisk walking a day.

Take the stairs instead of the escalator.

    Walk to work.

Spend some time walking in nature.

It’s a powerful, free, and easy way to get more active, release stress-busting endorphins and begin a path of self-love.

  • Hit the Gym
  • Joining a gym at any age can seem daunting.

But once you get past your initial reluctance, it is the ultimate stress-buster.

    Just make sure you:

    1. Ease yourself in: follow ‘progressive overload’ and build slowly and sustainably
    2. Pick the right activity for you: from crossfit, spin classes, powerlifting, boxing and HIIT workouts…  There’s bound to be something that slots into your interests, calendar and social preference.

Apart from the obvious benefits (a toned body, better heart health, higher confidence and self-esteem), the gym is also a great way to make and build relationships.

    We’re social animals after all.

So get a membership to your local gym and rope your friends into becoming your workout buddies!

Here is one recommendation for a product we have that I always take to the gym. The foldable, Travel Mat Set

    Conclusion: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

    So there we have it!

At Yogikor, we’re all about holistic self-love.

We’re not expecting you to move mountains from day one.

But starting small and upping your daily movement is a great way to refresh, revitalize and recharge.

Whether it’s Yoga, walking, gym, or something else, choose something that fits your needs, calendar and preferences.

Aim for 20+ minutes every day, and you’re well on your way to building a self-love practice that lasts.
