6 Positive Habits To Improve Your Mental Health

6 Positive Habits To Improve Your Mental Health

Resilience, positivity, and a life of self-love

Mental health… is not a destination, but a process’- Noam Shpancer

How often do you feel hurt?  Scared?  Lonely?

Congratulations, you’re human!  Everybody feels the ups and downs of life.

And rather than feeling good 24/7 (no matter what peoples’ Instagram feeds tell you), true mental health is how we navigate the inevitable storms.

It’s our ability to:

  • Approach setbacks with poise, resilience and optimism
  • Form healthy (and supportive) relationships, and feel worthy of love
  • Accept ourselves, perceived flaws and all
  • Recognise and consciously reduce unhealthy habits

The beauty of all this, is that great mental health is a habit.  You can, through a series of daily practices, train yourself to love yourself a little more day by day!

And at Yogikor, that’s what we’re all about. So let’s jump in 👇

How can I boost my mental health & wellbeing?

  • Daily Fitness & Exercise- Get Moving!

  • A 1 hour workout is 4% of your day.  So really, there are no excuses!  We’re probably preaching to the converted here.  But the benefits of daily exercise are endless:

    • Control your weight
    • Reduce the risk of (heart & immune) disease
    • Boost confidence
    • Improve your mental health & mood

Start small, and build slowly.  From cross-fit, to weight training, spin classes and team sports, there’s an option for everyone.

Want to sweat in style? Our Yogi-Essentials equipment range has got you covered.

  • Meditation & Mindfulness

  • Meditation is like finding your real home.  We learn to turn our awareness inwards and find the peace and joy of simple being.

It provides timeless lessons, like learning to:

    • Listen to your body (and slow down when you need it)
    • Heal your inner pain through awareness & loving kindness
    • Recognise when you’re acting from a place of anger, and taking a breath to reconsider

Starting small, for just 15 minutes a day, will grow into a beautiful practice.

  • Sleep Solves Everything

  • We all know the drill… As adults we need 7-9 hours to function at our best.  Anything less and our mood, concentration and stress levels take a hit.

And yet according to the CDC, 1 in 3 adults don’t get enough sleep.

Whether it’s from technology ‘priming’ you to stay awake, poor work-home boundaries or excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, we’re putting our mental health at risk.

So make the bedroom a ‘no phone zone’, avoid large meals and caffeine before bedtime, and get consistent with your sleep patterns!

  • Gratitude & positivity

  • We spend time in the gym shaping our bodies… Why don’t we spend time shaping our mindsets?

Cultivate an attitude of gratitude to learn to:

    • Appreciate and savour the good times
    • See the good in what we do have, rather than the flaws
    • Weather the tough times, as we slowly come to see the good in all situations, no matter how challenging

  • Brain-healthy diet

  • You know what they say… You are what you eat!

The impact of food on our mental health is no different.

A solid diet boosts your focus, mood stability, and overall self-image.  For maximum benefit, focus on consuming:

    • Plenty of fruit and vegetables
    • Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (e.g. Salmon)
    • The majority of your foods from whole sources (not processed)

  • Get help if you need it

  • No one is an island.

And although the journey to improved mental health is a challenging (but highly rewarding) one, you don’t have to walk it alone.
